Hollywood Burbank Airport Breaks Ground On $1.2B Terminal

In a ceremony held on January 25, the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority officially commenced work on Hollywood Burbank Airport’s new replacement terminal. The $1.2-billion project, called “Elevate BUR,” will be located in the northeast section of the airport property, and consist of a 355,000-square-foot building with 14 passenger gates. Plans also call for new shopping and dining options, a ticketing lobby with automated kiosks, a new TSA checkpoint, and a new baggage claim area.

“We’re excited to celebrate this milestone that brings us one step closer to a more elevated travel experience for our passengers,” said Hollywood Burbank Airport executive director Frank Miller in a news release. “I want to thank our Commissioners and the Burbank residents for their support, without which this project will not be possible.” Replacing an existing building which originated in the late 1920s, the new terminal is designed to modern standards, with greater distance between the terminal and airport runways. Additionally, the project will meet modern seismic codes and ADA accessibility standards.

The design of the terminal, which comes from a team consisting of Corgan, IHolder, Pankow, TEC, CannonDesign, and Burns & McDonnell, features a swooping roof canopy that gradually morphs into the facade of the airport’s parking structure. The design is intended to be reminiscent of a silver screen in a public plaza – a recognition of the film industry’s roots in Burbank – with other elements that allude to Mid-Century Modern architecture.

The replacement terminal, approved by Burbank voters in 2016, is slated to begin serving passengers in late 2026. Construction at Hollywood Burbank comes after a decade of work to modify the larger LAX airport complex roughly 17 miles to the south. LAX recently celebrating the topping out of its latest expansion: the eight-gate Midfield Satellite Concourse South.
